Origins of Confirmation

Since almost all the problems concerned confirmation spring from its peculiar history, it is necessary to give some account of its practice through the ages.

From the first days of the Church as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, the rite of baptism has been completed by the laying on of hands for the gift of the Spirit. There are two passages in the Acts of the Apostles which describe an outpouring of the Spirit as a sort of confirmation of Baptism, and these may help us to understand the sacrament of Confirmation. These two episodes describe a rite imparting a gift of the Holy Spirit which was connected with baptism yet distinct from it, involving a laying-on of hands. Once Philip the deacon had preached and conferred baptism, the Apostles sent Peter and John to the converts. On their arrival “they prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for as yet he had not come upon any of them, because they had only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit” (Ac 8:14-17). Later Paul carried out the same rite

at Ephesus; “On hearing this they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus; and when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy” (Ac 19:5-6).

Prayer by Pope Francis for the Extraordinary Missionary Year 2019

Heavenly Father,
when your only begotten Son Jesus Christ
rose from the dead,
he commissioned his followers
to “go and make disciples of all nations”
and you remind us that through our Baptism
we are made sharers in the mission of the Church.
Empower us by the gifts of the Holy Spirit
to be courageous and zealous
in bearing witness to the Gospel,
so that the mission entrusted to the Church,
which is still very far from completion,
may find new and efficacious expressions
that bring life and light to the world.
Help us make it possible for all peoples
to experience the saving love
and mercy of Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever.
